Shelby County’s present courthouse was built in 1913. A National Register nomination describes the building as Beaux-Arts, designed by Louisville firm Joseph and Joseph. It was the fifth courthouse on the Main and Fifth streets site.
The Shelby County Historical Society says the cornerstone was laid June 11, 1913, and held relics from the previous courthouse’s cornerstone, along with Shelbyville street photographs and newspapers from that period.
The Society reports that construction cost $120,000 and that the building was equipped with central heating, plumbing and electricity.
