Baptist Health could receive $3 million toward an expansion of health care services in Shelby County under a proposal reported by The Lane Report. The allocation still requires final approval by the Shelby County Fiscal Court.
The business publication reported October 29 that Judge/Executive Dan Ison and Baptist Health CEO Gerard Colman announced the proposal October 27. It described a possible freestanding emergency department and urgent care facility, while noting that a project location, total investment and construction schedule had not been announced.
According to the report, the proposed Baptist allocation would come from $5.5 million the General Assembly designated for Shelby County health care needs. The remaining $2.5 million would support other county health initiatives.
The proposal follows county consideration of a broader funding framework. Fiscal Court's October 20 agenda listed a first reading of an ordinance to establish a Medical Support and Health Infrastructure Fund. An agenda item establishes what officials planned to consider; it does not establish that the ordinance or a later allocation passed.
For residents, the next useful details are the actual services, their location and when they could become available. Those answers depend on the county's funding action and Baptist Health's project planning. The reported proposal should not be read as an announcement that a new emergency department has been approved for construction.
