Shelby County High School’s Blue Shellbys won a national championship in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the school district reported June 12.
The district announcement identified the championship team as David Hebdon, James Hebdon, Toby Ricke and Brennen Shera. Scott Ricke coached the team.
Shelby entered the national bracket as the No. 4 seed and received a first-round bye. The district said the team then defeated state champions from Maryland, Georgia and Arkansas, finishing with a victory over the No. 2 seed.
The district’s account also described a run of five consecutive state championships. Over six seasons under Ricke, it reported a 48–0 regular-season record and a 28–1 record in state postseason play.
